SAINT JAMES WAY FROM LEON

ITINERARY

DAY 1 LEON

Transfer from Madrid to Leon by van.

León is the capital of the old kingdom of León; highlights: the gothic cathedral, the old town (Barrio húmedo) with its tapas bars and beautiful medieval monasteries and palaces.

At the hotel we give you the information of the trip.

Then, free time to explore the city.

We meet for dinner.

DAY 2 LEON-ASTORGA (48 kms)

We start the ride on easy terrain through small villages. Half the way we find one of the most beautiful medieval bridges on the Camino in Orbigo.

We arrive in Astorga, an old roman town with its unique cathedral and Gaudi’s palace.

Dinner and accommodation next to the cathedral.

DAY 3 ASTORGA –VILLAFRANCA (75 kms)

We start climbing beautiful mountains till Cruz de Ferro, sacred  area of Templar knights and covens and then, a long down hill of 15 kms to Molinaseca, an old beautiful village of the hilly areas of Leon.

We can shorten the climb thanks to the van support.

We arrive at Ponferrada, with its famous Templar castle.

After small villages and family gardens we arrive at  Villafranca, the old capital of the Bierzo region in Leon.

DAY 4  VILLAFRANCA-PORTOMARIN (85 kms)

We enter in Galicia region through an spectacular climb, reaching the old celtic town of O Cebreiro. From here, we can feel the celtic atmosphere of Galicia.

We can use the van support if needed.

Then, a long down hill to Triacastela passing by Samos and its old monastery till Sarria, where we´ll have lunch. Then, one of the most spectacular rides to Portomarin where will have dinner and accommodation.

Portomarin was an old commercial town on the shore of the Miño River and the old town is submerged by a dam.

DAY 5 PORTOMARIN-ARZUA (52 kms)

Typical land-scape of Galicia with small farming villages and beautiful forests.

We’ll start finding other pilgrims on the way.

Arzúa is an authentical Galician village famous for its cow cheese, and surrounded by incredible land scapes.

Dinner and accommodation in a country house in Arzua.

DAY 6 ARZUA-SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA (38 kms)

Rolling terrain for the final ride with the great emotion of arriving in Santiago.

We stop in Monte do Gozo to have a look of the ancient city of Santiago just 5 kms before reaching it.

Arrival in Santiago de Compostela, the end of the Camino. Also called the western Jerusalem and grave place of the apostol Saint James.

We´ll have time to explore the beautiful city.

Accommodation and dinner in Santiago.

After breakfast, we say good-by and return to Madrid.
